Safeway Oil Recovery furnishes its customers with 55 gallon drums that are painted and labeled to meet regulatory requirements. Full drums are picked up and replaced with clean empty drums. The full drums are transported back to the facility where they are bulked and sent to our parent company Flex Oil Service for recycling.

Research and actual testing indicates that approximately 12% of the oil remains in drained filters. Drained oil filters are not exempt as “empty containers” under EPA 40 CFR 261.7 regulations.

It is highly recommended that all generators of used oil filters declare your intent to recycle (which eliminates the stigma of a Hazardous Waste), have filters removed properly by a permitted facility such as ours for recycling both the remaining contents of oil, and the filter material.
